The Derby was made the second jewel of the Triple Crown with the Belmont Stakes racing first in New York. On June 20, the Preakness Stakes completed the series in Maryland on Oct. 3. Churchill Downs was devoid of its traditional 150,000 Derby fans, but nearly 10 million Americans watched from home.
